I went to checked rates for the dates of my travel. I failed to put in a time .. so default noon to noon showed a rate of $12.59 a day. So I went to change my reservation to the better rate -- I put in my times of 9:30am and 2pm return. It came back with $18.77 a day. :scratchheadblue: WTF
Well I started playing change-the-time-to-see-the-rates ...it stayed $12.59 a day if I returned it by 12 noon. If I returned it at 12:30 onward it changed to $18.77.
So my old reservation with the new rate (#1) -- still active. Notice $18.77 for day 1 and day 2 is $28.55 plus $3.19 per additional hour.
Image
my new reservation (#2) Notice both days are only $12.59 per day and each additional hour is $2.14
Image

So in short it was nearly HALF THE PRICE for 2 hours less
Based on the below rules... what do you think would happen if I returned it at 2pm vs 12 noon? Do you think it would cost me an extra $2.14 an hour for the additional 2 hours?
Quote:
A. Rental Rates: Daily Rental rates are based on a 24-hour rental day starting at the time of rental. The minimum charge is one day, plus mileage, if applicable. The renter will be charged for each hour and/or any part of an hour in excess of a rental day the renter keeps the vehicle until the vehicle is returned, up to the applicable daily rate. Mileage charges, if applicable, will be the number of miles driven as determined by the odometer readings at the beginning and end of the rental. A Return Change Fee of $15 will apply if you return 24 hours or more prior to your reserved return date and time. If you return 24 hours or more after your scheduled return date and time, a Return Change Fee of $10.99 per day will apply ($54.95 max.), in addition to any other rental charges. If the renter fails to comply with the conditions applicable to the rate, including any geographic driving restrictions, a mileage charge, surcharge or other rates may apply

Yes. They would charge you for the additional hours when turning it in later than the original agreement. It would indicate so on the little slip the hand-held computer/scanner spits out at turn in.

I would still be better off financially if I used reservations #2 vs Reservation #1... correct??

I've been checking rates for my Florida trip in December. Sometimes, because I'm so in the habit, I type in LAS for location by mistake. For a moment I get excited until I realize my error. Folks, car rental prices in Las Vegas are a bargain. Right now a compact (Ford Focus) from Dollar would cost me $264 for four days in Tampa. The same car in Las Vegas for the same four days is $126. Both those sums are total after taxes and fees.

Rent the car. See more than just the Strip.

Fortunately because I check the rates three or four times a day, I locked into the Ford at TPA for $152 total about a month and a half ago.

I agree completely. Check out our website, or our last trip report, for some ideas. It is amazing what gems Las Vegas holds for you.

Either way, congrats on the upcoming trip. Wish we were going back sooner.

now $71.79 but I lowered the other to $59.13 :whoo:
Amazing how just changing the return time by two hours --- varies so much.

I'll have to remember that on my next rental reservation and do some time comparisons to see if the rate changes.

Good tip!

Well in the end I cancelled the more expensive res.
--------
when they gave me my invoice... It turned out to be the same cost as to the one I cancelled. I will call about the extra 6 bucks they charged me. I can't complain -- that extra time yielded $$ at the poker table.

Just an update (reading russgrad's website update reminded me), I continued to hunt around on Dollar right up until the day before I left for Florida. Remember that Ford Focus, Compact for $152? Well perseverance magically changed that into a Chrysler 200, Midsize for a grand total of $78 for the four glorious days. Love Dollar.
