So one of the ways we clipped the cost of our trip back was to eliminate the rental car for the whole trip. (We may do a single day rental, but that's still undecided.)

So that brought me to two questions:

1. Is there a rental place downtown? (I've always picked a car up at the airport.)
2. If we forsake the car altogether in favor of public transportation, what's the best way to get down to the strip? I hear people talk about the Deuce and CAT, but I've never used either.

(Yes, I know I could just Google this stuff, but what fun would that be?)

If there is a group of you you might just take a cab and split the cost.

If not the Deuce is probably the best way. If you are going to get on and off buy the 24 hr pass. Also walk over to the downtown transit mall and board there. You can usually get the seats up front on the second level.

You have to weigh the time it takes on the Deuce into the whole equation. Do you want to spend the time it will take to get down to the strip to save a few bucks? If you do take it get off at Wynncore and walk the strip from there. It takes FOREVER to get anywhere once you get to the strip area.

Heh, I'll have to look up where the "transit mall" is. This is the first time I've not rented a car since switching to downtown as my preferred area.

Did they close the DT Transit Center that is/was on Casino Center just a couple of blocks north of Fremont Street when they opened this new one? If I'm not mistaken, Bonneville Ave would be a longer walk from the ElCo.

I think they did Tom, but he could check. If you look at the new map it doesn't show the DTC on it.

From the Elco now he would be better off just going over to the Neonopolis boarding area.

Yeah, I thought it was back behind the Fremont near the Lady Luck too, but yep, they moved it.

Good info guys, thanks.

Cool, thanks. Looking at the single day rates... We may just skip it and get a 3-day pass for the deuce. I just want to save a few bucks and keep anyone from having to be the "driver" if we start drinking earlier then we normally do. (Which I'm sure we'll do.) I'd rather play it safe.

As Big Cheese said in his most recent trip report, "You can't drink all day if you don't start in the morning."

(I'm trying to coax him out...)

Depending where you want to go, there are plenty of other options for bus routes. The SDX is much better than the Deuce, but we often use the just off strip routes instead. I can't remember the specific routes just now, but I'll look it up and let you know.

The SDX is like the old 303. It services the strip and shopping outlets, but only has limited stops, so is much quicker. From Downtown (3rd street?) it stops at Bonneville centre, Arts district, Stratosphere, Sahara, Convention Centre, Wynn/ FSM, Bellagio/ Paris, Excalibur/MGM, Town Square, South Outlets and the SSTT. It misses out two stops each time. It's still slow centre strip, but isn't as congested as the Deuce.

I linked to it up there somewhere. It is kind of a "train" on wheels.Articulated bus (like two stuck together) limited stops and you buy your ticket at the "stations" before hand to make it quicker as you board. You do not have to wait for everyone to pay b4 the driver can move.

I saw that but I guess what I mean is, what's the difference between it CAT, and the Deuce? Are there really three transit agencies or are they all under one organization?

The RTC (Regional Transportation Commission ) is the umbrella agency.

On the strip the SDX (Strip and Downtown Express) only stops at the MGM, Paris and Wynn going north and, I think, FSM, Bellagio and Excalibur going south. Not 100% certain on the south stops.

Here's all of the SDX stops on the Strip (Excluding the South Strip Transfer Terminal):

Northbound:

Callaway Golf Center/Town Square
Mandalay Bay
Showcase Mall/MGM Grand
Paris
Wynn

Southbound:

Fashion Show Mall
Bellagio
Excalibur
Mandalay Bay
Town Square
Las Vegas Premium Outlets (South)

The SDX is a great way to get to/from Downtown if where you are going to or coming from is close to an SDX stop. If not, you're going to have to transfer to the Deuce along the way, and those buses get packed pretty quickly after a stop or two in either direction. I used the SDX and the Deuce back in March to get down to the Strip but opted to take a cab back to Downtown instead as just didn't feel like dealing with a crowded Deuce bus for a few stops so I could transfer onto an SDX bus instead of taking the Deuce all the way Downtown.
