AA-US is going to happen, as I don't think their creditors feel that they can survive without a merger. It's the only merger option that makes sense. Merging with a smaller airline like JetBlue, Frontier (Whose owner, Republic Airways Holdings, has the For Sale sign out after buying and merging Frontier and Midwest together a couple of years ago.), Virgin America or Alaska isn't going to be of much benefit to either airline. Merging with Delta or United would be more or less a split up of the airline as Delta or United would have to bring another airline or two into the fold to acquire some of the assets. The only thing Delta would be interested in are AA's operations at DFW and MIA, which is somewhat interesting considering Delta shuttered their hub at DFW back in 2005.

There have been reports of International Airlines Group, the parent company of British Airways, British Midland International and Iberia, may be putting together a deal with TPG Capital to acquire the airline. IAG would own 25% of the airline, which is the max foreign ownership allowed by U.S. law (This is similar to Virgin Group's investment in Virgin America.) and TPG Capital would own a controlling stake. IAG and TPG Capital could potentially play a role with any US-AA merger deal as well. With AA being in the same airline alliance as BA and Iberia, keeping the airline in OneWorld is important, and it's already been publicly stated by US Airways that the merged airline would stay in OneWorld (US Airways is in the Star Alliance, but has been the black sheep of the family, especially when Continental joined the alliance back in 2009 and now being part of United.).

AMR creditors OK $11 billion American-US Air merger: sources

Deal slated to be officially announced on Thursday.

From what has been rumored, the combined airlines would retain the American name and the headquarters would remain in the DFW area.
