Here is this Asus Win8 touchscreen again for sale. This time $379, BUT you get a $76 Buy.com credit. using their point system. If you are going to use that credit anyway, then the laptop costs you $303 plus tax. An incredible price for this full laptop, it's not a netbook.

Here's pretty much that same Asus one, down to $299. Quite a deal, I paid over $400. I think the only difference between the Q200E and the X202E is bluetooth, and that the Q was sold by Best Buy.

Win 8.1 was made available today. They did respond to consumer complaints and made a number of tweaks, but the glaring omission is the continued lack of a true start button. I don't know why they are being so stubborn about this. The current setup is just too inefficient, you need to scroll or swipe to get what you would get from just one click with the prior start menu. Maybe they figure they are not meaningfully different from Apple's launchpad or Application menu, which may be true, but that's an aspect of OSX that I have never liked.

I also have not seen anything about a release of a smaller Surface. Too bad, I am looking forward to a smaller form factor with an integrated kickstand.

Is Win 8.1 worth getting now, or waiting for the official release? I really don't like Win 8

sounds like 8.1 is in it's final stages. I was not a fan of 8. I really doubt I will feel any different about 8.1
time to stock up on Win7

Pebs, wait for the official release.

I actually like Win8 with a tablet. But on a laptop, it sorely needs a regular start menu. Fortunately there are several free programs that will get you a normal start menu back.
