Spirit.

The thing is that US Airways moving to D actually has been in the works for a few years, predating the merger with American (Which is not approved yet.).

Not unexpected, especially at Washington National, where the two airlines control 2/3rds of the slots. Delta and US Airways had previously done some horse trading of slots at National and LaGuardia back in 2011, with Delta acquiring 132 slot pairs at LGA while giving US Airways 42 slot pairs at DCA (and the rights to operate an additional daily flight to San Paulo starting in 2015). In order to get Federal approval of the deal, 16 slot pairs at LGA and 8 at DCA were auctioned off (JetBlue won 8 at LGA and all 8 for DCA while WestJet got the remaining 8 LGA slot pairs.).

JetBlue and Southwest currently lease some slots at Washington National from American and will be given the opportunity to buy those slots. DCA and LGA slots don't come on the market all too often, and when they do, airlines jump at the chance for them. The divestiture of AA's two gates at Love Field is surprising, but under the agreement that sees the Wright Amendment phased out next year, the number of gates at the airport were reduced from 32 to 20, making gates there an even more valuable commodity and the two gates at DAL AA will be giving up are the only gates they have (Currently Southwest has 16 gates, American has 2 and United has 2.). I could see JetBlue ending up with these gates, as they have previously expressed interest in serving DAL.

With this deal, coupled with growing support from quarters that originally were trying to block the merger, this merger's chances of happening shot up tremendously.
