As Culinary bemoans Cosmopolitan, alliance members will take a different approach — thanking tourists for visiting

We were in that area twice this week. No sign of union pickets anywhere.

Weekends are made for douchebags in Las Vegas, it seems.

Weekends are when it is the most crowded, which makes sense, but at the same time, they are backing down from their threats about picketing in front of Cosmo. Here's the rub, they're risking alienating the crowd that keeps their members employed, tourists. They've been having to resort to bringing in picketers from other unions from other states (under the guise of union unity) to boost their own numbers for these pickets. Myself, I do not care either way in regards to whether a property is union or not. Picketing does nothing to sway my decision to be a customer at a resort in Vegas and annoys me more than anything else. If the employees at Cosmo have worked there nearly three years without a union contract, one has to wonder if the union themselves is to blame for that and not the property. You do have those types within unions that have a pretty militant stance and are unwilling to compromise. When Eastern Air Lines went out of business, the unionized workers that had been on strike for nearly two years claimed victory. There was no victory, as a lot people (like my grandfather) saw their pensions slashed significantly as the Eastern pension plan was sold to the government and any employee benefits like health insurance were canceled the moment the airline shut down. If putting thousands of workers (many of them members of other unions that represented other employee groups) out of work is a victory, you're kidding yourselves.

My dad, who worked at GE (large jet engine division) for 35 years, both prior to and after WWII, was a union member as he had no choice. He was a hard working guy who really took advantage of 'piece work' perks. He hated strikes and always told me that the union, IBEW, cost him more money than he could ever make up. Perhaps in the days of sweat shops and owner exploitation, before OSHA and other federal protections, unions served a purpose. These days they tend to be greed motivated, starting at the top. I'm happy to get paid for whatever effort and skill I can bring to a vocation. If you're a bonehead, who never prepared to join the workplace in meaningful way during your formative years, then you only deserve to earn a bonehead salary. The world is a competitive place. Live with it.

Scratch a union member and you'll find a socialist. Scratch more deeply you might even find a communist. :icon_wink:

Too bad my Friday and Saturday next weekend are pretty much booked solid, I would have loved to have gone down there with a few stink bombs.... Insulting the tourists is a pretty dumb tactic and it is going to lead to a bullhorn beat down.
