all the train people I've spoken to about this say there is no route for a new passenger train because of the mountain range. All the good crossings are full of road or track already.

either they are blowing expensive tunnels, or blowing expensive smoke.

They'll be using Union Pacific's rails and paying the railroad for the use of them. I know UP has been reluctant in recent years in allowing passenger trains on their lines between L.A. and Vegas and part of the reason why AMTRAK has not resumed service into Las Vegas is that while their trains are supposed to have priority on other railroads' lines, most railroads don't give them a lot a leeway in that, especially since AMTRAK doesn't pay for access to the lines of other railroads.

Which means this won't be a high speed rail at all, just another small-time Amtrak. I thought the whole point behind these guys was that they were building their own high speed system?

There's a safety concern with high speed rail in a desert environment. Something about the steel rails getting out of true in the intense heat.!. For slow freights I guess it's not an issue, but for bullet type trains it can be fatal.

I think you may be confusing these guys with Desert Xpress, who will be building their own high speed rail line between Victorville and Las Vegas and will be using primarily the I-15 right of way and Bureau of Land Management-owned land in which to lay their track. Desert Xpress has yet to even lay a single piece of track. X Train is paying UP enough money to allow them to run their trains faster than what AMTRAK was able to do when they operated the Desert Wind. From what I have read, it used to take as long on AMTRAK to go from LA to Vegas as it does to drive because UP would not give more priority to AMTRAK (although they were required to, but most railroads give them narrow windows of priority which with a delay get closed). Plus you wouldn't have to deal with I-15 traffic to/from Vegas. I think with this train originating in Fullerton, they have a better chance than Desert Xpress since it's a lot closer to most of LA than Victorville is.

I'll be in my room by the time the train arrives.

Nice idea, but no thanks.

Since it avoids all auto traffic, why does the trip take 5+ hours? Shouldn't it be more like 3?

Too bad they couldn't drop off near a monorail station.

Trains on those lines generally do not run higher than about 70 MPH (the tracks are not ideal for speeds higher than 80 MPH) and at Cajon Pass, the speeds drop dramatically when ascending and descending the pass. Compared to driving, there is not much of a speed advantage. While X Train is paying Union Pacific for priority on their lines, reality is that they may not always have it (something AMTRAK has had to deal with over the years throughout the country). This is part of the reason why AMTRAK has backed off from any plans to restart service between Las Vegas and L.A. This is also why XpressWest (formerly Desert Xpress) is planning on building their own line since they would be the only ones to use it and they can built it to be able to handle higher speeds.
